Safeguarding at Khenalom

Our safeguarding practice is built around the Supported Accommodation (England) Regulations 2023, Children Act 1989, Care Leavers Act 2024 and current statutory safeguarding guidance, with named safeguarding leads, clear reporting routes, and close working relationships with local authorities, social workers and Ofsted.

Every young person is advised on who their key worker and management is, as well as the process as to raising a concern via a member of staff, their key worker, their social worker, an independent advocate, or Ofsted directly.

We take a trauma-informed, relationship-based approach to behaviour and support, built on clear and fair boundaries, positive reinforcement and restorative conversations.

Privacy is respected throughout: any security measures we use (such as entry systems) are limited to communal and entry areas only, never private spaces, and are there to keep young people safe, not to monitor them.

Our approach reflects Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026, the government's statutory guidance for protecting children and young people — including its focus on listening to young people's voices, joined-up multi-agency working, and recognising when different risks and vulnerabilities overlap.

All staff receive safeguarding training before they start, including modules on abuse and neglect, exploitation, Prevent, trauma-informed practice, contextual safeguarding, de-escalation, and relationship-based approaches to supporting young people. Staff are safely recruited, including enhanced DBS checks, and continue to build their skills through ongoing reflective practice and supervision.

If a young person ever goes missing, our response is risk-led rather than time-led: prevention through trust and relationship-building comes first, we work closely with police and the local authority, and every young person is welcomed back without judgement.

An independent review of our safeguarding practice takes place every six months, so our approach keeps improving.
